Stages of Clay
Slip- a mix the constituents of a clay body with water. Slip is used to join of sections of leather hard clay, such as handles and spouts. To adhere figures or other motifs to unfired ware to form a bas-relief.
wet clay- fine-grained soil or water-soaked earth, this can be reclaimed from bone dry clay and water or packaged\purchased from a clay company. Ver plastic.
Leather hard- still able to be worked with, but carefully. Pieces could be properly connected to each other at this stage. Still has some plasticity, but be careful.
Bone dry-completely air dried, cannot be added to or worked with. Nothing can be added or changed. Most fragile stage, do not handle! This is the last stage that will be able to be reclaimed.
Bisque ware-bisque has been fired in the kiln once. All water has been pushed out by the extreme heat and is now a permanent piece (cannot be reclaimed).
Glaze ware-Ceramic glaze is an impervious layer or coating of a vitreous substance which has been fused to a ceramic body through high temperature firing. There are very specific directions, found on each bottle, to add glaze to bisque to get the desired effect.
