Charcoal Tree Drawing
The students were introduced to the Charcoal Tree Drawing on ___________, during class. We talked about symmetric and asymmetric compositions and how to create each type of balance. We looked at a plethora of student examples as well as professional works too. We reviewed how to use bracelet shading to create a three dimensional cylinder (a review from a project from first quarter). I gave video demonstrations on the smart board on how to use a combination of cylinders to create a realistic, high school level tree. On this day I also handed out the step-by-step instructions, an example, the grading rubric, and the sketch paper so the students could start their sketches. I also showed a video demonstration on how to use charcoal, bracelet shading, kneaded erasers, and the blending stumps so the students could be prepared for drawing with a new material. The project is due On ______________________ at the close of the student's class.
The Step-by-step Directions and Rubric are found below
Steps for Charcoal Tree Drawing
1. Complete two sketches on newsprint paper with two types of balance asymmetric and symmetric. Make sure you have branches, roots, a ground, and details BEFORE the next step.
2. Show your neighbor to confirm that you completed the requirements. Ask your neighbor which they think that you should do your final drawing of.
3. Bring it up to Mrs. Roach to receive ONE 18 x 24” final paper.
4. Draw your planned tree VERY lightly in pencil. Remember to use cylinders to make the trunk, branches and roots.
5. Add charcoal to the tree very carefully to make the tree look realistic.
Hint: the bracelet-shading technique can be useful to show the shape of the tree. Edges of the tree are clear and crisp.
6. Add texture and value according to the previously learned techniques (cylinder, paper bag)
7. Grade yourself using the rubric.
Turn in on ________________________ at the end of class. With your two preliminary sketches and the rubric.
