Self Portrait-Grid Drawing
Students always panic when I let them know that the next assignment is to draw themselves. I hear the words, "I can't draw... especially myself!" one thousand times. This project is going to refine the skills they have already learned and they will also be learning some new "tricks of the trade" as well. The student will be drawing from a photo that I will take and print in the classroom. It is not important what the end product is. It is important that they learn the steps of the process.
Using a grid is an easy way for an entry level artist to gain some confidence in drawing. Before the drawing they will first do a grid exercise. They will also be drawing eyes, nose, mouth, and ears from a picture before they begin.
For this portrait drawing, like all those works of art in the very near future, it is imperative for the student to be in class every day. We are going to be learning and drawing every day. Some days will be production days and others will be demonstrations. Open studio is BEFORE school from 7:10-7:50 am.
This project starts on April 22nd and is due on May 16th.
The daily goals/responsibilities are as follows:
April 22-Grid Exercise/using grids reading (photo taken)
23rd-finish grid exercise, turn in at the end of the period (photo taken)
24th-draw two sets of eye from a picture
25th and 30th-draw 2 different noses and 2 different mouths
May 1st-2nd-draw two sets of ears and two different types of hair (this is due at the end of class).
May 5th-16th
You will find the hand out given in class below. Students who missed any part of the exercises are to see me upon their return!
