Magic Realism Self Portrait-Portrait (self), Person, Place and Passion.
Frida Kahlo was a female artist who painted herself often. She painted her true self, not an idealized version of herself as other artists have done before. We are looking at her art for inspiration for this project.
Before we jump into drawing we are first going to intensely student human anatomy before we draw we learn the steps to get there successfully!
We will be visiting Bodies...The Exhibit with out sketchbooks and pencils in hand, so be prepared to draw form LIFE!
The Assignment
The assignment will sound simple, but it is not! You need to have a self portrait, another person, setting in a place you know and love, a passion, and a hand (either yours or someones). You are telling a story about yourself trough a drawing. The viewer may not know the whole story but you will need to depict it to the best of your ability.
Before we start drawing the final project the steps we must take are great!
Follow these steps:
1. Draw your own hand in three different positions for 3 different times (10 min, 20 min, and 30 min)
2. Draw a skull from the model in class in great detail, front view.
3. Study the facial muscles on line and in books.
4. Using colored pencil and tracing paper overlaying the skull, draw the musculature of the face and head.
5. Draw the bones of the hand.
6. Draw the musculature of the hand over the bones on tracing paper.
7. Do thumbnail sketches of what will visually represent your passion and the place/setting your drawing will be (keep in mind thumbnail sketches will be used as your final idea).
8. Using the grid system and your photograph enlarge your photo to twice the size. (make sure that you plan how you want your portrait to be arranged and make sure the photo is taken accordingly). NO FRONT POSES preferably :)
9. Draw in the other person, using a photo as well.
10. Draw in the hand and passion.
11. Then draw in the setting.
12. You will use 2 colors of color pencil to slightly splash some color, before you make any rash decisions ask for a classmate's opinion and then mine!
Ask yourself these questions:
Did I actually take the time to make the preliminary drawings? Did I use value to show the skull in great detail? Did I look very closely at the musculature of the face and recreate it on my tracing paper? Did I use the time in class to complete the requirements? Didi I create a work that actually took 11 hours?
